Michael J. Sullivan’s NECESSARY HEARTBREAK tells the story of a single dad from New York who has lost his faith and is struggling to raise his feisty 14 year-old daughter. When they stumble upon a trap door in a church basement, they discover a portal leading back to first-century Jerusalem during the tumultuous last week of Christ’s life.
Michael Stewart has weathered his share of hardship: a troubled childhood, the loss of his mother, even the degradation of living on the city streets. Now he’s raising his teenage daughter, Elizabeth, on his own and doing the best he can at work and at home. But he’s turned his back on his faith — that is, until the morning Michael and Elizabeth volunteer for a food pantry at their local church.
While storing boxes in the basement, they step through a mysterious door. . .and find themselves in first-century Jerusalem, during the tumultuous last week of Jesus Christ’s life. It is a dangerous and violent place, where doing what your heart tells you is right can get you imprisoned — or worse — and they are thankful to take refuge with a kind widow. But when they come face-to-face with Judas Iscariot and the condemned Christ himself, Michael realizes that before they can escape Jerusalem, he must experience history’s most necessary and shattering heartbreak — and that pain and loss must happen if Michael is to be set free: to live, love, and reclaim the blessings he has in the present day.
When I read the blurb, my initial idea was, it would be a modern , challenging book – where the author through their characters tries to challenge different aspects of religion and gives a fresh-new look in Jesus’s life other than what written in religious books !!!! …but instead it is totally a book for Christian-fiction readers.
Michael and Liz the two main characters, time travels and gets to spend time in the last week of Jesus’s life and become part of an epic historical time… they get to spend time with Jesus and his disciples and get to see first-hand their suffering and sacrifices. But here as I was reading , it seemed that both of them were some what insensitive and unsympathetic towards the, and too self-centered.
One thing I liked is, The author gave an interesting new look towards of Judas Iscariot and Pontius Pilate.
Overall, this book is not for me and not for many people, mostly this book can be liked by Christian fiction lovers.
